Myth Mechanic

An Instructional Game Using Interactive Fiction

Play the interactive text adventure that introduces students to myths and constellations, while at the same time provides an opportunity to solve puzzles, talk to mythological character, act as those characters, and engage in a computer-based reading adventure.

There are three myths represented in this game and they come from Native American, Middle Eastern, and Ancient Greece backgrounds.  Each myth is described in the game and gives player the opportunity to understand what the myth means and how it came to be. This is a game about solving puzzles and uncovering mysteries relating to these myths. Solving these puzzles requires good reading and problem solving skills.

Game Introduction

You are in a windowless tent made of green canvas. As you finish unrolling your sleeping bag, you notice that it's getting late and the stars will soon be out. Good thing you remembered to bring your telescope. The tent door is to your south.

What we hope people will take from Myth Mechanic

We want students to walk away from the Myth Mechanic game with an understanding of the relationships between myths and constellations, an increased awareness and aptitude in exploring, problem solving, an increased appreciation for mythology, and a sense of accomplishment.

Based on instructional game design theory, we wanted to create an environment where students have access to the actual myth text, a supportive framework to augment the students' grasp of the material, and puzzles and challenges that encourage students to critically examine the relationships and problems expressed in the game.

"I want to use Myth Mechanicr for my class. Can you help?"

We are more than delighted to help you figure out what you need and how you might be able to use it. See the project page for some further details.
