Funding

The Role of Presence within Mixed-Reality Learning Environments, $11,800 (Funded)

Submitted to Utah State University, New Faculty Research Grant

Brett E. Shelton, Principle Investigator, May 2005-June 2006, 1 mo/yr contribution
The mis-categorizing of cognitive states involved in learning within virtual environments has complicated instructional technology research. This study will be a qualitative exploration into the nature of immersion, the extent to which the computer system delivers a surrounding environment, and presence, the sense of “being there” in an environment, and their role in students’ learning.

Virtual Environment Prototyping, $14,000 (Funded)

Submitted to Utah State University, New Faculty Research Grant

Ryan Moeller, Principle Investigator, May 2005-June 2006, 1 mo/yr contribution.
The main research question of this study is: what do researchers in the humanities offer to the conversation surrounding the development of virtual environments used in mainstream industry and educational applications?  There is a large body of work being developed on the literacies required by such environments or the cognitive development enhanced through interactive scenarios.  This study investigates the ideological impact of these environments, or understanding how they operate in ways that reinforce particular cultural values.  One possible outcome of the study will be to locate alternative uses for mainstream virtual environment technologies that support sustainable partnerships between university researchers and industry developers.
